How bad is the security skills gap & what to do about it

The AppSec threat territory is periodically evolving, and these threats are becoming remarkably convoluted. Unfortunately, companies are not ready when it comes to data security.

The current labor shortage doesn’t help with that fact.

Globally, there are more than 3.5 MILLION security jobs with no one to take them. Companies are getting desperate.

According to Cybersecurity Ventures, the number of vacant cybersecurity jobs globally has grown from 1 million to 3.5 million from 2013 to 2021.

That’s a 350% growth in just eight years!

It directly caused 64% of organizations to experience security breaches.

A shocking 38% suffered breaches that cost them more than a million dollars.

The biggest skills gap is with cloud security, testing & product security.

If ever you face the same obstacles, here are the things that you can do:

1. Help team members achieve their career goals.

Leaders want to grow the business, but employees care about growing their careers.

The best conversation you can have with them is about how you can contribute to growing their careers.

Not KPIs, not their responsibilities, and not brainstorming on how to get past your current project’s roadblocks.

Support them by helping them acquire new skills relevant to their line of work.

2. Hiring is not sustainable long-term. You need security training.

Did you know that hiring a new engineer can cost up to $35,000?

You can train hundreds of other engineers and developers in their field of expertise with the same amount!

3. Improve retention rates with training.

According to LinkedIn’s Annual Workplace Learning Report, last 2019, 94% of employees will stay with their current companies if they invest in their career growth.

Losing an excellent employee because there are hardly any opportunities to learn is one of the worst things a company can experience.

Training gets you immunity to the labor shortage.

4. Build a more diverse team.

75% of organizations are changing their hiring structures to hire more women, and 60% are looking to hire more minorities.

Also, paid internships. Trust us, they work.

5. To stay afloat, teams need to update their skills constantly.

If you're not innovating, you're adapting. If you're not adapting, you're falling behind.

In this economy, skills are everything. You don’t want to fall behind.
